- You Can Rewire your Brain!
Habits play an important role in our health. Understanding the science behind how we develop habits and learning how we can break those patterns and create new ones can help us to make healthier choices. The research on neuroplasticity shows that we are very capable of creating new pathways through practice and repetition no matter how old we are! Learning to take the road less traveled will strengthen the new habits as the old habits begin to gradually diminish. Think of how a river or creek is formed. Overtime, water traveling down the same pathway will create a deep crevice in the earth allowing it to flow in the same pattern. The water will only flow in a different pattern if it is forced perhaps by a fallen tree, rock or man-made dam. Now the water has been redirected and begins is forge a new pathway or tributary. This is very much how thoughts travel in our brain. Overtime, our negative self-talk or poor habits can forge deep and familiar pathways in our brain making it difficult to navigate in a different direction. The research on neuroplasticity shows that with practice we can train our brain to choose a new pathway. Suddenly, the road less traveled begins to become the more popular choice ultimately leading toward a more positive outcome. How cool is that! I found the awesome infographic below that was created by the professionals at Alta Mira, a San Francisco-area rehabilitation and recovery center. I think it really helps to break down the science behind neuroplasticity for the lay person. - What Everyone Needs To Know About Their Chakras
Source: https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-11943/what-everyone-needs-to-know-about-their-chakras.html Article Title: What Everyone Needs To Know About Their Chakras Written by: Deepak Chopra, MD FACP, Founder of The Chopra Foundation Each of the seven chakras are governed by spiritual laws, principles of consciousness that we can use to cultivate greater harmony, happiness, and well-being in our lives and in the world. The First Center: The Root Chakra The root chakra, known in Sanskrit as muladhara, is located at the base of the spine. It governs your most basic survival needs. When this chakra is clear and energy flows through it freely, we feel secure and confident that we can easily fulfill our needs. However, blockage in this area can cause us to feel anxious and worried. The Second Center: Creativity Chakra The creativity chakra, called svadhishtana, is associated with creativity in all its expressions. Located in the area of your sexual organs, the energy of this center can be used for biological reproduction. When channeled into higher energy centers, it fuels the creative force that enables you to paint a beautiful picture, build a business, or create a life of love and abundance. The Third Center: Energy Chakra The energy chakra, manipura, is localized in your solar plexus. It's the seat of your power in the world. When this center is open and flowing, you are capable of translating your intentions and desires into manifestation. When it is blocked, you feel frustrated and ineffectual. The Fourth Center: Heart Chakra The heart chakra represents the unifying energy of love and compassion. Known as anahata, it is located at the center of the chest. The heart chakra is dedicated to overcoming separation and division. When the heart center is blocked, there is a sense of alienation from others. When the heart center is open and flowing, you feel connected at a deep level to all beings in your life. The Fifth Center: Expression Chakra The throat chakra, called visshuddha in Sanskrit, is the center of expression. When the fifth chakra is open and flowing, you have the confidence that you are capable of communicating your needs. When the fifth chakra is obstructed, a person will often feel that they are not being heard. In order to feel alive and empowered, it's important that this energy center is clear. Blockages in this area are often associated with thyroid problems or chronic neck pain. The Sixth Center: Intuition Chakra The intuition chakra, known in Sanskrit as ajna, is located in the forehead. It is the center of insight and intuition. When this center is open, you have a deep sense of connection to your inner voice, and feel guided in your choices. When blocked, there is a sense of self-doubt and distrust. The opening of this chakra is usually associated with a clear sense of connection to ones dharma, or purpose in life. The Seventh Center: Consciousness Chakra The consciousness chakra, known as dahaswara, is visualized as a lotus flower at the crown of the head. When the lotus unfolds its petals, the memory of wholeness is restored. Remember that your essential nature is unbounded, and that you are spirit in disguise as a person. This is the full expression of yoga – the unification of being with action, of universality with individuality. Each chakra has a color. Each chakra holds a different feeling/sensation. - Are bra’s always necessary?
(If you are a man, please share this article to your wife, sister, mother and/or a friend.) I always wonder about it. Do you? I see a lot of women wearing bras that are way to tight, to the point that it is actually limiting the rib cage mobility causing tightness on the muscles around that area. Have you ever felt that you can not take a deep breath while wearing a bra? Have you ever felt easier to breath after removing the bra? If your rib cage is not moving properly, your lungs will have less expansion too. Less rib cage movement will cause the muscles around your ribs to become tight. Sometimes, I wonder if having a limited mobility on the rib cage, combined with muscle tightness can increase risk of breast cancer. Think about it... If you the muscles that pull the shoulder forward (per example the pectoralis major and serratus muscles tightness) are tight, it will also decrease the space in the armpit area and create compression. Many patients develop nerve compression on this area secondary to forward shoulder and those muscles being super tight for so long. This compression can cause irritate the nerve causing pain to radiate down the arm, sometimes all the way to the fingers. As a physical therapist, I saw many time that as soon as I release those muscles, the nerve compression disappear. The same happens if I am trying to decrease inflammation and increase movement to the lymphatic system (this system is responsible to clear the toxins in our body) around the arm pit (see picture). Once, the shoulder and rib cage moves better, the axillary lymph nodes (around the armpit) feels better and suddenly the patient can even take a deeper breath. If the axillary nodes are inflamed and the lymph is not moving properly, more toxins will be stagnated in the armpit area. It makes sense to me that more stagnated toxins will increase the risks of cancer, right? I do believe that the wrong size Bra or the overuse of Bra can affect your health. I am not saying to go outside or exercise without a bra. But I definitely believe that bras with wire should be avoided as much as possible. Go braless as much as possible. You probably don't need to sleep wearing a bra. We can also add a foam roller and stretches to the pectoral and serratus as a part of our exercise routine (see below). If you need help on how to performance those exercises or need to release muscle tightness, improve your posture and/or improve your rib cage mobility, contact an experienced physical therapist. I found this awesome article that was written by Louise Habakus on GreenMedInfo LLC that talks more about this topic: Evidence of a relationship between bras and breast cancer may rethink the societal convention of wearing bras. I realize it may feel some combination of uncomfortable, unprofessional, or unnecessarily provocative. Societal convention has most of us trussing up before going out. If you are reading this at home, do me a favor and unhook. Then keep reading. There's Some Evidence of a Relationship Between Bras and Breast Cancer. Yes, seriously. Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer authored a book called Dressed To Kill. They interviewed 4,000+ women in five major U.S. cities over two years. Half the women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. They found: 75% of women who slept in their bras developed breast cancer 1 in 7 who wore their bras 12+ hours per day developed breast cancer 1 in 168 who did not wear a bra developed breast cancer Within one month of ditching their bras, women with cysts, breast pain, or tenderness found their symptoms disappeared. Breast Size, Handedness, and Breast Cancer Risk A 1991 article in the European Journal of Cancer found that premenopausal women who do not wear bras had half the risk of breast cancer compared with bra users. The data also suggest that bra cup size (and breast size) may be a risk factor for breast cancer. Cancer Is Not a Disease Andreas Moritz revealed that Japanese, Fijians, and women from other cultures were found to have a significantly higher likelihood of developing breast cancer when they began wearing bras. His book explains how cancer is an adaptive healing mechanism, arguing that people would die more quickly if the body did not form cancer cells. Bras and Girdles Can Reduce Melatonin Levels Japanese researchers found they can lower melatonin by 60%. Melatonin has anti-cancer properties. And Spanish researchers wrote about the use of melanonin in breast cancer prevention and treatment. There's No Downside to Being Cautious. Am I suggesting this scanty fact base offers definitive proof of a causal relationship? No. Am I suggesting you should be comforted that the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the New York Times all believe it to be bunk? No. That's a longer discussion, but it's sufficient to say that politics and economics create active bedfellows and the absence of a commercial imperative might have something to do with the dearth of research. Many of us don't need to wait in order to do something that intuitively seems to make a lot of sense. Frankly, in view of the alarming rate of breast cancer prevalence in this country (12.3% of women) and the growing trend to remove body parts in an attempt to improve our odds, it seems we might be receptive to a bit of behavior modification. Things to Consider Doing: Go braless as much as possible. It actually gets easier. When these muscles and ligaments are forced to bear the weight of our breasts, muscle tone returns. The more you wear a bra, the more you need to wear a bra. Chest muscles and breast ligaments atrophy, which then makes it feel uncomfortable to go braless. A 15 year French study conducted by Besancon CHU professor Jean-Denis Rouillon found that "medically, phyisiologically, and anatomically, breasts gained no benefit from their weight being supported in a bra." There was some evidence that eliminating bra use helped ease back pain. He described bra wearing as a "false need." Remove your bra when you get home. Don't wear a bra to bed. And if you're self-conscious when going out, try wearing camisoles, thicker material, or nipple pads. It does make sense to wear a support bra while exercising. Wear Loose Bras in Softer Materials and Avoid Underwires. Tight bras and underwires restrict lymphatic drainage, promoting congestion and stagnation of toxic waste materials that are supposed to be flowing out for excretion. Further, the closing of lymphatic vessels reduces the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Michael Schachter, MD, FACAM wrote that bras and tight clothing can impede lymph flow and contribute to the development of breast cancer. John MacDougall, MD wrote in The Lancet that repeated inflammation from constricting bras are implicated in painful breast cysts and lumps, scar tissue develops, and milk ducts become plugged, all of which is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer. The metal in underwire bras can create an "Antenna Effect" according to the father of Applied Kinesiology, George Goodheart, DC. Repeated pressing of metal over an acupuncture point can cause longer-term stimulation of neuro-lymphatic reflex points corresponding to the liver, gallbladder, and stomach. "It will likely make her sick; slowly and quietly," said John Andre, ND, DC. Here's a list of no-underwire bras recommended by Donna Eden, Vicki Mathews, and Titanya Dahlin. Donna adds that plastic underwires have the same negative impact as metal underwires. Slide the Wires Out! There's no need to toss your expensive underwire bras. If you cut a small opening at one end of the wire, you can manually remove it from each cup. You'll probably find that your bra supports you nearly as well without them. Oh, and don't be fooled. They make look like plastic, but they're actually plastic-coated metal. If you find you still need the support, you can buy and insert plastic wires. Andre explains how. Read the whole article here. - Learn how to embrace your gifts!
What am I here to do? What are my gifts? Do I have special talents? Of course, we all do. The beautiful part of human life is that we are all born with a special gift. We all know that no two people are alike. Because of this, we are all individually created and given certain gifts to serve our soul's purpose. When we detach from our ego and listen to the callings from our higher self, we can evolve into powerful beings that can touch lives and change the world. Here are five ways you can embrace your talents and gifts: 1- Be Yourself Some of us have gifts, talents, and interests that are not accepted. Luckily, times have changed and we can pursue our talents much easier than even a decade ago. Be yourself, you don't need to hide anymore. 2- Do The Work & Stop Procrastinating Everyone has 24 hours a day. Are you using your time optimally? 3- Detach from the Ego The online world can be quite disgusting sometimes. You need to develop a sound mind and detach from your ego in order to know that you can’t please everyone. Bad comments or reviews and thumbs down do not discredit your work, gifts, and talents. We can’t please everyone. Know internally that your gifts and soul’s purpose is on the right path. Stay true to YOU and your inner world. 4- Live from the Heart A lot of people live from their head and not necessarily their heart. When sharing your gifts, be true to you and your heart. Remember no other person has your same life path. Stay in check with your heart to let it guide your talents. 5- Embrace the Emotions Process your emotions as you go through your journey, but remember many things in life are a test. Keep persevering and do not give up even when you are at a low point. Sometimes we need to experience things to develop and strengthen our chakras. Embrace all the feelings, the positive and the negative. How do you embrace your talents and special gifts? I'd love to hear it! Do you need help embracing your gifts? - What are Chakras?
There are 7 chakras in the human body, each vibrating at a different frequency. Energy flows through the chakras from one part of the body to another. If your chakras are blocked, your energy can become stuck. Each chakra corresponds to a color and internal organ or body part. First Chakra – base, root Red – Energy. It stimulates brain wave activity, increases circulation, awakens us physically and energizes blood flow. It connects us to our physical self. Second Chakra – sacral Orange – Joy. Stimulates appetite, the colon, digestion, and physical relationships. It connects us to our emotional self. Third Chakra – solar plexus Yellow – Wisdom. Connects us to will and personal power.
